A Beautiful World

May 26, 2012

I love to re-purpose something.   It's just a green thing to do, you know saving the planet and all.
This is the cutest idea.  An old wine rack in the bathroom.  You could also use this wine rack in a doctors office waiting room, for magazines.  You could place it in the garage for shorter gardening tools.  How about in the kitchen for a rolling pin collection?  What would you use it for?

Speaking about Karma

So, I posted this Karma thing 2 days ago.  Here's a karma story for you.

Yesterday, my husband was out running and found wallet contents.  Credit cards, voter registration card, ss card, etc..,  There was no cash and no wallet but a large stack of pretty much everything else.  As he kept running, he kept finding other scattered cards.  When he got home, he showed them to me.  We both agreed that the person with all those cards probably had cancelled them all but would be relieved to know someone had found them.  He had a name and address from the contents and called information.  Fortunately, the number was a listed number.  The guy came to our house immediately to get the contents.  He was thrilled, to say the least.  He offered money and my husband turned it down.  When he left, he said to my husband, that is great karma, something good will happen to you for this.   (which was odd that he even mentioned karma a day after I blogged about it!)

Well, last night, our beloved dog, Sandy, got out of our yard via a broken fence post that we did not realize was broken!!!!  She is 5 and has only gotten loose one other time and we found her right away.  A lady knocked on our door and brought her back to us before we even realized she was missing!!!  It was 7:30 at night.  If it had been later and dark, it could have been bad.

After Sandy was returned, my husband told me what the guy said when he got the wallet.  My husband said, that was his karma coming back to him!!!

How cool!!!!

Terry's Closet Before and After!!!!

Terry had a large master bedroom and 3 reach in closets, instead of one master!  We needed some organization for her.  She is an awesome client.  We had a lot of fun together and planning her design was a joy.  I could really listen to her all day long.  She is from Boston, so she has that cool cool accent.  I am a voice over artist and love different dialects.  She is a great family gal and I instantly relate and could really hear her stories forever.  About the design, she knew what she wanted and was great at collaborating her design with me.
This is the before of closet #1
And here is the after-
So we were able to utilize the space better.  The bed is right off this closet.  I wanted her to have a nightstand type thing to put her bottle of water, pills, books, whatever.  I also wanted her to have a hamper.  Right before she goes to bed, she can put her clothes in the hamper!!! She desperately wanted a file drawer!  (that is what is above the hamper-it is a lateral file drawer).  Beautiful is it????

Here is closet #2  My main mission was to get rid of those shoe hangers on the door.  (stay tuned for closet #3)

Terry had a lot of hanging items and I wanted closet #2 to be just double hang!!!!!  Above it is a shelf for boxes!!!  Don't you love the darker brown she used to paint the walls with????  LOVE IT!!!!

Here is closet #3

Here is closet #3 after!!!  The hanging clothes are in the middle of the closet, although it looks like it is on the end- the photo is misleading.  The end had baskets!!!
Above is the left side (with the 3 sliding baskets).  One drawer.  Close ups of closet #3  This large shoe shelf (10 shelves) is on the right side.  (In closet #2 you will notice all the shoes hanging on the door, my mission was to get rid of that thing)  With sliding doors, you really have to keep hanging in the middle!!!  This was the only closet out of the 3 that had sliding doors the other doors were french doors.

There you go!!!!  All done!  So happy, Terry was thrilled.  She will be even happier in the morning when she is organized and clutter free and able to see all her clothes.   I think she will spend less money when shopping because she can see all her stuff.

Here I am, saving the world one...closet at a time!!!!!  YAY!!!!

Isn't this the cutest idea????  Putting Barbie to sleep in a shoe rack!!!  I don't have girls but if I did, I would so totally hang this on the back of the door for her to put her barbies in to go to "sleep" until it is time to play again!!!!  Love it!

Karma

Is your circle positive or negative?  If you are negative in thought, word or deed, perhaps you need to rework your plan.  You attract what you are.  If you are giving, it will show to your clients and you will most likely get more work because of it.  If you are not, word gets around fast.  I have worked for and with some real jerks over the past couple years.  I really started to think I was attracting them to my life for some odd reason.  Not true!  As soon as I identified the problem, I left it.  Sometimes it takes trial and error but eventually one lands in an environment that is perfect and positive.  If you feel liked and valued that is a great sign you are where you are meant to be.  That's Karma, baby!
Garages

I have garages on the brain!!!  I am honored to be able to design the garage for homearama.  If you are not familiar, homearama is the Tidewaters Builders Association home show.  Closet Factory is working on a house in the show and I am honored to get the garage, along with my design manager, Claudia!  We met today to go over our design and I am just so happy.  I will include the photo as soon as the garage is built (mid June).  Here are some of my inspirations!!!!
I am pretty sure if we had a garage like the one above, my husband would never leave the garage!!!!  :)
I love the red above.  The walls are going to be gray in our design with red cabinet doors!!!!  Black and gray will be on the floor.
I will add more photo's later.  Our Closet Factory cabinets will sit flush on the floor, which I like much better because bugs and dust and other unmentionables can't accumulate.  Are you inspired to clean your garage now????  :)

Tension Rods!
They are not just for curtains any more.  Love these idea's to better organize your space.

May 14, 2012

How cute is this???  This would be perfect in a new kitchen!  Here is another one that is built into the cabinets.
Of course, I could do something like this, with the doggie dishes underneath!!! Love this design!!!  Don't forget your favorite four legged pet when designing a new pantry or kitchen or even laundry room!!!  :)

Organizational Tip of the Day!

Metal garbage cans are cool, retro and look good in a garage. No, not for garbage, silly- for STORAGE!!!! :) Put all that gardening soil, fertilizer, bug killer and other misc. things that are on the floor of your garage in a bin!!!!! If you want to get real fancy, label it and then tape over the label with large, clear packing tape. You could even put your kids soccer balls and other sports stuff in there.

April Fools

Juicing!!!! Day 4

The worst day, yet!  UGH!
OK!  I admit it.  I am hungry.

Juicing!!!! Day 6

Here is a yummy blended morning drink!

handful of spinach
1/2 bottle of coconut water
2 banana's
spoonful of peanut butter
crushed ice

YUM!  I can't think of a better way to start the day!!!!  :)

May 9, 2012

So....Here is an amazing low cal dessert, I found it on pinterest!!!!  We LOVE this.

First cut up a banana and dab some PB on it.  I also peeled a clementine because it was sitting on the counter.

Next, microwave about a cup of choc chips and small amount of almond milk.  (maybe a quarter cup) Start with 30 seconds and then try to stir...if it is still hard- 10 more seconds...cover the banana's and orange slices in chocolate...

Then stick in the freezer to harden!!!

YUMMO!!!!!!!

Closet Envy

Organization is paramount to a well run house.  You can have a day that flows, or a day that doesn't.  It's your choice.  Take a look at this before and after.  Which space would be easier to find things in?  Which would leave you anxious?  Start today!!!  Just one shelf.  Free yourself!

More about Juicing!

I am still juicing and I am feeling better than ever!!!  I drink about 3 or 4 juices a day.  Mainly vegi juice.  This morning I had:

1 banana and peanut butter in the blender and added 2 juiced apples to make an amazing smoothie.

My skin is noticeably better, I feel more energetic and I am falling asleep way way easier than I used to.  I have completely stopped drinking coffee and eating meat.  I wasn't out to stop anything.  I just feel better and have more energy when I don't have these things.  The one occasion when I had part of a steak, I felt very different.  Lethargic, kinda.  On the occasion when I have had coffee in the morning, I have a LOT less energy.

My favorite juice is cauliflower, broccoli and one apple.  My son calls it broccoflower juice! :)

Meatless Monday Recipe

We have meatless Monday at our house.  Since my juice fast, though, I have gone from eating meat 5 to 6 days a week to NO MEAT at all.  Now if you would have told me before my juice fast that I would do away with meat, I would have called you crazy.  I have always loved a good steak and baked potato.  I feel sooooo good, however, from my juice fast, that I have no plans of messing that up.  I am still juicing and I am eating very healthy, too.  Tonight my husband made the best meal and I need to share it with you because I added NO MEAT to my portion and it was really delicious!
He made brown rice first.

2 TBSP olive oil
1 medium onion finely chopped
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup brown rice
1 cup white wine
3 1/2 cup vegetable broth
1/4 cup parmesan

Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add onion, salt and pepper and cook until tender (6-8 minutes)
Add rice and cook for about a minute.  Add wine and simmer until rice is tender and broth is absorbed (18 - 20 minutes)

Meanwhile...
Heat snow peas, frozen peas, 2 scallions (thinly sliced) and some button mushrooms.  Cook until heated through (about 3 minutes) and add this to the rice!

YUMMO!!!  Devine, seriously.  (and healthy)  My husband and boys added rotisserie chicken precooked at the grocery store to theirs.

April Fools

Ever since my boys were little, I have been making April Fools day treats.  It's fun.  They are in middle and high school, now and I still do it!!!  Why?  I don't know.  I guess it has become a bit of a tradition.  This is what I am making this year.

Here are some things I've made in the past.  I am trying to get better about taking photo's!
Sushi- rice krispie treats with a fruit roll up around them and gummies inside.
This was chocolate rice krispie treats, ice cream with caramel sauce and fruit roll up or some other chewy candy rolled up in balls!!!

One more I can find:

A fried egg milkshake!  HA!  Ice cream with marshmallow fluff on top with glaze on very top!

Click here for a great movie about why to juice and the concept.

Love this movie.  You can watch it for free on HULU!
It is called, "Fat, Tired and Nearly Dead"!

Juicing!!!! Day 5

So, after I blew my fast last night on some hummus and a shortbread cookie, I decided I should just throw in the towel.

Today for breakfast I had:
1 strawberry juice
1 apple juice  (4 apples juiced, for my husband and myself)

Lunch:
Juiced 4 tomato's and a quarter of an onion and had one glass and saved the rest (YUM!)
8 pieces of shrimp tempura sushi

Dinner:
Large spinach salad with strawberries and pistachio's and sunflower seeds
2 glasses of wine (another juice!!!)

I took a walk with my support system and friend, Carolyn, and told her I fell off the wagon!! LOL!  She also had a small salad last night.

I will say, this morning I woke up with such energy, I told my husband it felt like I was on drugs or something.  I got more done today then I usually do in a week.  Took a long walk with my juicing friend and just feel good about all of it.

My take away:
I would DEFINITELY do this again.  I really do have a great amount of energy.  I love that it forced me to try all different types of juices and I am certainly hooked.  Perhaps not for a fast but definitely I will be drinking much more juiced juice.  I will probably never buy store bought again.  The juicer makes it so much better.  Happy Juicing, friends!!!!

Juicing!!!! Day 4 part 2

Well, I had a moment last night!  I got out of bed and came down and had some pita chips and hummus.  And a shortbread cookie.  I NEVER eat past dinner and it is very out of character!  I finally broke my juice fast!!!  Hey, sometimes a girl has to have her COOKIE time!
:)  I am proud of myself that I was able to go 4 days.  It was a great experiment.

March 29, 2012

Juicing!!!! Day 4

Today has been the worst day yet.  I am not hungry, just sick.  Tired, lethargic and foggy.  I even felt like I was going to throw up at some point.  I woke up with canker sores on the roof of my mouth.  (I have never had those before and they hurt!) I had pretty much expected all this, as everyone has talked about it.  Most people get past it in day 4 or 5.  If tomorrow is not better,  I will seriously consider adding eating salad to this fast.

One interesting note.  I woke up more awake than I normally am first thing this am.  I had one cup of coffee and immediately felt worse.  I have decided tomorrow I will not drink coffee just juice and see if that great feeling stays with me.

What I have had to eat

Morning:
2 strawberry juices (from yesterday0
1 vegi juice (also from yesterday)

afternoon:
2 vegi juice's (I was not able to drink it all and felt really sick)

March 28, 2012

Juicing!!!! Day 3

Still hungry!

I am not as foggy today and only wanted one cup of coffee this am.

Made some new juices, as I finished the others:

Fruit Juice:

4 Apples (tried a glass of just that- AMAZING)
After the glass of apple juice- I had very little left so added
1 box of strawberry's
1/4 box of blueberry's
one more apple
2 lemons

This is an amazing concoction!!!  Love it.

Vegi Juice:
A full box of spinach
broccoli slaw
2 carrotts
apple
2 cucumbers
2 handfuls of basil
2 lemons

Also, pretty good.

I am really hungry but I don't think it is my stomach that is hungry- I think it is my mind.  I just want to eat food.  I think I miss the chewing, preparing, all of it.  I have gone for walks every day, since this started.  Yesterday was the worst day, today is not all that great, but mainly because I miss food.  I do have more energy today, than yesterday.

Why Juice?

Reminding myself from a blog I found on mindbodygreen.com

 #1 Reason-

Our livers are responsibly for cleansing and detoxifying the blood, which makes them absolutely essential. Every day, blood runs through the liver and is purified of toxins and waste matter.

With a diet of unhealthy food, the liver struggles and the blood is likely to be sub-optimal. One function of the blood is to move oxygen around the body, giving energy to limbs and organs. Poor blood quality equals low energy.

Since fresh juice is absorbed very quickly, it hits the blood and liver, aiding the detoxification process and helping the liver to do a fantastic job.

Juicing!!!! Day 2

OK!  I admit it.  I am hungry!!!  I have read that the first 3 days are hard.  It has been about one full day since I had food.  I wasn't hungry AT ALL last night, nor this morning!  It hit me around 2pm.  I ate a few pieces of whole wheat bread yesterday around 1pm with goat cheese on top (I was working and didn't really have a chance to eat a full meal)  and that was my last meal before juice.  I went for a 4 mile walk, as well.  Usually I run, but didn't want to do that on my first day of juicing.

My menu today:

Morning-
2 cups of coffee (I keep reading this is not good when you are juicing but I don't care- I need my coffee)
2 glasses of fruit juice this morning (from yesterday's batch)
Several, several, several waters!!!!

Afternoon-
2 vegi juices (from yesterday's batch)
1 cup of chai tea

PM-
1 vegi juice (the last from yesterday's batch)

I am feeling foggy, lethargic and uninspired.  I even took a nap today.  I worked a half day, instead of a full day.  Hoping I will have more energy tomorrow.   Stayed upstairs while my family ate.  I was afraid I'd cave in and eat - just holding on to get through the next two days.  After that I am convinced it will be much better!

March 26, 2012

Juicing!!!! Day 1

Got my juicer today!!!!Woohoo.  I couldn't wait, so I went ahead and started my juice fast this afternoon.

Here is what I did today with food and juice:  this morning I ate 2 packs of steel oatmeal and drank two cups of coffee.  I got home around 4 from work, found my juicer and made juice.  I had to eat a quick lunch, which I normally NEVER do but I had a very busy day and only ate 3 pieces of wheat bread with goat cheese on top.

I spoke to my friend, Carolyn, who is also doing this fast with me and is my support system.  I tend to over analyze things and read a book and several blogs on juicing.  I asked my friend what her strategy was, as some people say to only juice fruit juice in the morning, some people say to not mix certain things or drink citrus unless you have been juicing for a few days.  She made me laugh when she said, girl I am just going throw stuff in there (except she said another S word) and blend it and drink it.  LOL!  Great way for me to put it in perspective.

My take away.  You can research this stuff to death.  WHY?  It is healthy, it is the juice of several different AMAZING anti oxidants.  Like the nike ad says, "just do it"!!!!

My first juice:

A head of cauliflower
a bag of celery
4 tomato's
couple handfuls of basil
one red pepper
1/4 bag of spinach

YUM!!!!!

I was excited, so I did another juice!  A fruit juice!!! (it is fun to see the beautiful colors that come out and I didn't want to stop!!!)

Second Juice:

5 peeled tangerines
1 pinapple
1 peeled lemon

I was excited so I drank one full glass of both.  I had enough left over to put in mason jars (the small ones that look like a glass you'd drink out of- not fat- thinner) I have 3 of each.  I will probably drink those tonight.  Not sure.

March 25, 2012

Pre Juice!

I am gearing up for my juice fast, which I think will start on Tuesday.  I am eating less processed foods for the next 2 days and no meat, so I am less sick with the fast.  Everything that I have read, has said to do this.  Breakfast was oatmeal.  Lunch was wheat bread with goat cheese and a salad and a bottle of naked juice.  For dinner,  I will have salad and wheat bread again and some strawberries for dessert.  I am really getting excited to start my fast!  :)

March 24, 2012

Juicing!!!!

I am starting a juice fast, Tuesday!  Absolutely, so excited about it.
It is Saturday and we are cooking hamburgers on the grill but starting Sunday I will just eat soups, salads and juices to get ready for my fast.  I keep reading that you need to ween off of the fat and processed food to keep from getting too sick, so thus the salad's and soups on Sunday and Monday.
I will keep you filled in on my progress!  If you have a facebook page, you can watch the movie, "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead,"  free on hulu, to get some inspiration!  Wish me luck!

The Long Stupid Race

I am a runner. A dedicated one. I’m not marathon status, but you know, I do my fair share of 5K’s, have a PR, and try and maintain 15 miles a week. The middle aged mom, who has discovered a power within. I’ve been living this lifestyle for the past 4 years or so. And, well, got pretty hooked on the concept. I have a running buddy, we meet once a week to pound the pavement. We do races together and sometimes invite other moms to come with us. We go to lunch after the races, or shopping. We think we are road warriors but certainly know our place in the pecking order. Kenyans we are not. We just keep our feet trucking down the long black road.
Last year I got a bit bored and decided I would start training for my first spring tri. No real time in mind, just a new challenge. A new power within me stirred!
So, I'm doing my thing, getting up and training for this tri at 5 am at the pool, I talk my faithful running buddy to come with me at 5 am and we joke about how absolutely strong we are to be such amazing athletes to get up at 5am to swim. Who else but major athletes would do this? We run still, during our swim days and occasionally get on the bike.
I am running this course and it is a straight road, no speed work, no hills, no long distance training because it's only a sprint triathlon (no biggie really, just another small challenge) and then: slam, bam, thank you mammo- I'm diagnosed! With Cancer! WHAT? Friday the 13th of February.
Screech in the road. What? How is this going to effect my tri? It is monumental but all I could think of is; I will still run this tri! I have worked too hard to stop now. Are you kidding me? Is this a joke? I must run in this race. I did not realize, I was about to run a different race.
So, now the road I've been running on is filled with rocks, hills, mountains even, pouring rain, waves, wind and blisters are on my feet, so it is hard to walk much less run. But, I run because a monster is chasing me.  Just when I think I am at the finish line, I am not; almost, but there is more to this run than meets the eye.  It's the stupid race, you know the one. The race that folks run in the desert for 3 days straight in 120 degree temps!  All I signed up for, was the 5K!!!!
Cancer! No one tells me, breast cancer causes one to go through so many various types of surgeries and strange procedures that it honestly hurts to run. The one thing on the planet that I have been dedicated about and helps the stress, puts too much pressure on my pecs and I can’t run! So, I walk! UGH!!!! WALK! It doesn’t help the endorphin issue much but I try and stay consistent and even keep my running log up to date with my milage from walking. My running buddy, lies and tells me she loves walking with me once a week instead of our runs because we can actually talk to each other. (she runs after or before our walks and is just being supportive and beautiful, I know she hates walking as much as I do).
So, I missed my first tri and I cried, no wailed, when I cancelled it because I was so ready for it and had been training so hard for it!!! The tri was to be the day before my 44th birthday and was 4-4-09. How could the numbers be more lucky? Instead, my bi lateral mastectomy was scheduled for, Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2009, another lucky day but not in the same way. I couldn’t bring myself to cancel the tri until March, I cried so hard on the phone with the race director that the poor woman gave me a full refund. That’s not the policy and I certainly didn’t expect that, but I think I made her feel so sorry for me, so helpless. This poor middle aged woman on the phone blubbering about breast cancer and all that training and all that getting up at 5 am and all that running. For what?
Little did I know, I had signed up for the larger, stupid race and one I will eventually get to the finish line of, with a cheering group of women and amazingly supportive men waving flags and chanting my name, but it's long and hard and I have blisters and it hurts!

My last reconstructive surgery was August 28th and I am cleared to run soon. I will and I am really hoping to do that same tri and it’s not listed yet but if I am lucky it will be another lucky date for my 45th birthday. I had no idea that running would stir such a power within but I’ve got it and can’t wait to start hitting the road, which now is paved for me in pink.

Me finishing my first tri- The Smithfield tri-I had lots of friends to support me.  It was a beautiful feeling, to cross the finish line.

Me with my youngest son, finishing my second tri-in White Lake, NC.

Bon Appetit

Here is Sandy, really hoping someone will drop some down to her! Not a chance on this meal!!!

Of course everyone who cooks this dish, needs a little wine, "to cook with"!

OK, I uploaded pictures of my culinary adventure! This is, by far, the longest recipe I have ever followed. It was easy but it did take forever. I started at 11:30 and ended the whole process around 4pm. I just reheated the meal on the stove top in the casserole when it was time to eat. Julia recommends this and says it tastes better when it is reheated. It was heavenly! Our house still smells fantastic and my boys both loved it but my oldest picked out the mushrooms!
